Avoid pregnancy naturally
Most women watch their cycles and know that their mid cycle or biological ovulation is the prime time to fall pregnant in. What they don't know is that the moon can trigger ovulation and bring on fertililty at any time during the menstrual cycle - including before, during and just after your period.
Not knowing this vital piece of fertility information can put women at risk of unwanted pregnancy even though they may be using effective contraception at what they think is their most fertile time.
This phenomena is called the natal lunar fertile phase.
Francesa Naish from her book The Lunar Cycle page 19 - 20 tells us "Over and over in clinical use of the lunar phase cycle instances have occurred where this cycle seemingly explains otherwise puzzling phenomena. Conceptions have always been known to occur when medical tests of fertility claim they are totally or nearly impossible. These times include during menstruation, during pregnancy or on the Pill.
Many women feel sure they know when they have conceived, only to be told by doctors that they are mistaken. Ultrasounds often give results that show the progress of the pregnancy to be 1-2 weeks at variance with the expectations of the doctor.
Many women feel sure that they know when they ovulate, have regular cycles, and yet have conceived against their wishes. These conceptions occur at times when they are quite sure they are safe.
Doctors have traditionally felt that these instances result from the woman making a mistake of one kind or another, and doubtless many of them do. However it is also possible that a further factor in fertility namely the lunar cycle, may be behind these seemingly erroneous cases"
The natal lunar fertile phase was re-discovered by Czech psychiatrist Dr Eugene Jonas in the 1950's. Dr Jonas was a catholic who lived close to the border of Hungary where abortion was legal. Abortion had been legalised in 1956 in Hungary due to the high failure rate of the rhythm method.
The rhythm method works (or doesn't work!) by counting days in your cycle of when you are most likely to be fertile based on your menstrual cycle history. The rhythm method does not take into account mucus observation or changes and fluctuations of your cycle due to stress, sicknesse, change in routine etc - this probably contributes to its high failure rate when used as the only means of contraception.
Dr Jonas observed the frequent failure of the rhythm method and the detrimental psycholigical effects on his patients first hand. He sought to discover why the rhythm method had such a high failure rate.
His interests in astrology led him to ancient writings which stated that "women are fertile during a certain phase of the moon"... But which phase of the moon?
Through further research, study and calculation he discovered that the lunar phase at which a woman was fertile depended on the relationship between the sun and the moon at the moment she was born.
You are fertile at that time of your cycle when the moon is at the same lunar phase as when you were born.
How is your Lunar Phase calculated?
The term Lunar Phase refers to the angle between the sun and the moon. When the sun and moon are conjunct or at 0 degrees this is a New Moon. when they are opposing each other or 180 degrees this is a Full moon and all other positions in between as shown in the diagram below.
Each individual is born under a particular moon or lunar Phase.
Each month when the moon returns to this same position (as it was at your birth) it can trigger your body to spontaneously ovulate even if this time occurs outside your normal midcycle fertile time.
Now it may not always do this, BUT THE POTENTIAL IS THERE.
Furthermore - the moon's trigger effect is increased by two factors - stress and sexual intercourse.
That is, if you are having sex during your natal lunar phase, the chances of ovulation being triggered are increased. And multiple sexual play at this time further increases this risk.
The bottom line is - If you don't want to get pregnant - you need to know when your natal lunar fertile time occurs each month. Is it occurring in line with your hormonal ovulation? Is it occurring during your period? Just before your period or just after? If you don't know then you may be taking unnecessary risks and not even know it.
What if I am on the pill? Ideally you should still know when your natal lunar phase occurs so that you can make sure you are taking the active pills during your natal lunar phase fertile time. If your lunar fertile time occurs whilst on the bleeding break and you have sex, ovulation could be triggered and pregnancy could occur. It is better to safe.
"It's just like Contraceptive Insurance!"
Armed with being able to recognise your biological fertile times and knowing when your lunar fertile time occurs - you can be confident about knowing the fertility status of YOUR body. This means increased peace of mind and the heightened ability to enjoy your sex life without fear of unwanted pregnancy.
You also have more choices about which method of contraception you can use as well as being able to choose when it is necessary to use contraception at all.
For example, if you know its not your fertile time, that is, you have no fertile mucus present and it is not your natal lunar fertile time including safety margins, you are free to choose no contraceptives at all. We advise that you spend a few months becoming confident in recogising your fertile signs before guessing if you are fertile or not.
It is ideal if you are using the following methods of contraception
- rhythm method
- natural fertility methods
- If you are on the pill - you may decide to time your Pill so that your natal lunar phase does NOT occur during your bleeding. This further maximises the effectiveness of your prescription, elimnating any failure of the pill during bleeding time.
How do I know which lunar phase I am born under?
There are a few tools around on the web that will give you some idea of your lunar phase, for example this site has a lunar phase calculator. You key in your birth date and rough time and it will show you what the phase of the moon was at your time of birth. (Limited to US and UK Time Zone).
